Volunteer of the Year

March 11, 2011

We are proud to announce Reis Calfayan, Operations Manager, was honored with the NARI Volunteer of the Year award for his time and dedication in educating his peers in the construction industry. For many years, Reis has facilitated the Certified Remodeler and Certified Lead Carpenter courses. He has devoted much of his time to ensure those taking the courses receive the best possible education. Reis believes that if his peers are well educated then we can raise industry standards and improve the industry as a whole. Reis is very gracious about this honor. “It’s nice to be recognized, I really appreciate it, but it isn’t needed. That’s not why I do it.”

Hazel House Foundation

October 22, 2010

This foundation is an enginneered precast foundation wall system by Superior Walls and was installed by the great crew at Weaver Precast. Superior Walls is the only option for Green & sustainable foundations.  The walls are pre-insulated with space to add more insulation, which aids in preventing energy loss in the basement. It took one day for the foundation to be completed. The day after the foundation was installed the first floor system was installed and we were able to back-fill within a few days. A standard foundation would take longer to install and would have to sit for a minimum of one week before we could continue the building process. We have become huge fans of Superior Walls and will continue to use it in our ground-up builds. Follow the link to learn more about the benefits of Superior Walls.

New Projects & LEED

September 13, 2010

We are excited to introduce two of our latest projects, the Wyndmoor Project, a whole house renovation, and Hazel House, a ground-up build. Both are ambitious projects. The Wyndmoor Project includes extensive interior renovations throughout the home, multiple additions, and a complete exterior facelift. Hazel House aims to earn LEED Platinum Certification.

LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system. It provides third party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance in  energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Click on the link to learn more about LEED.

We will post pictures and weekly updates for both projects. We hope you will enjoy watching the process as much as we will!

2010 Arts and Business Council Award

May 21, 2010
tags: ,

Calfayan Construction and Abington Art Center were recently honored with the 2010 Art and Business Council Award. We are very proud of this accomplishment. We are also very proud of Laura Calfayan, Owner, who had to present a speech in front of 1,300 people. We send special thanks to the Arts and Business Council of Greater Philadelphia for honoring us.

The project that earned us this award was completed in summer of 2009. Abington Art Center and the Little Abington Meeting House Restoration Committee collaborated with Calfayan Construction on “a good old fashioned barn raising”. The goal for this project was to construct an outbuilding near the 1836 Quaker Meetinghouse that sits on the Art Center’s grounds. The Calfayan team saw the benefit (and fun!) in collaborating on this pro-bono project, and provided guidance, consultation, construction expertise, volunteer labor, equipment and project management resources. The partnership between Abington Art Center and Calfayan Construction exemplifies the spirit of cooperation between business and the arts that can happen in a recession. Their collective work and effort has resulted in the newly restored meetinghouse and outbuilding complementing each other and making it a viable public space and a new art venue for the community.
